Flood Death Toll Rises to 54, 19 in Feni

The death toll from ongoing floods across 11 districts in Bangladesh has risen to 54 as of Friday, August 30, with two more fatalities reported. On Thursday, the toll stood at 52. The district of Feni has suffered the highest number of deaths, with 19 fatalities so far.

This updated information comes from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief’s report on Friday. The victims include 41 men, 6 women, and 7 children. The causes of death range from drowning and snake bites to electrocution. The districts affected include Comilla (14 deaths), Feni (19), Chittagong (6), Khagrachari (1), Noakhali (8), Brahmanbaria (1), Laxmipur (1), Cox’s Bazar (3), and Moulvibazar (1). One person remains missing in Moulvibazar.

The report also highlights that, while the flood situation has improved in some areas, such as Sylhet, Habiganj, and Chittagong, a total of 64 upazilas and 486 unions/municipalities remain flooded. The floods have affected over 10 lakh (1 million) families, impacting 54.64 lakh (5.46 million) people.

Currently, 4.69 lakh (469,687) people and 38,192 livestock remain sheltered in 3,269 flood shelters. The Ministry of Relief has deployed 567 medical teams to provide services in the affected regions.

The armed forces have played a significant role in relief efforts, distributing 1.94 lakh (194,285) relief packets, 19,260 packets of cooked food, and rescuing 42,766 people. In addition, 18,389 people received medical care, with helicopters assisting in the rescue and treatment of 153 individuals. A cash allocation of Tk 4.52 crore has been provided for the flood victims.

As floodwaters recede, many people are beginning to return to their homes from the shelters.
